So this year the wifey decided to treat me to premium Japanese wagyu for my birthday dinner.
It is usually quite rare that we get to have my birthday dinner with her on the actual day itself as I’d either be booked by friends, family, back in Penang or one of us would be too busy, so that in itself was a pleasant change.
After some research and based on my love for good beef, Dilys settled for Gyukingu’s Hartamas outlet as it was highly recommended.
It lived up to its hype.
Featuring very good wagyu from the reknowned Japanese region of Saga, the juicy cuts of succulent meat generously criss-crossed by beautiful marbling was a culinary delight.
We tried wagyu sashimi, which was so good that the wife, who is usually afraid of red / uncooked meat, actually found it delicious.
We also had a beef platter mix which featured ribs, assorted cuts and even yummy beef tongue. Very nice.
Your meats would be grilled over a beautiful ember flame from actual charcoal which they give for every table.
Showstopper was definitely the premium wagyu cuts of Saga Zabuton, which we were told comes from the chuck of the cow. Extremely good and feels like you’re chewing on a meaty chunk of beef-flavoured butter. Literally melts in your mouth.
With meat as fantastic as the wagyu Saga Zabuton, you literally just sear it for a couple of seconds before enjoying it.
Their Japanese curry beef rice was also pretty decent, though it lacked spiciness and paled in comparison to its stars of the show.
Washed down with Kirin on draught, it was a great meal and highly recommended, especially if you’re a fan of wagyu and don’t mind to splurge on special occasions.
Environment is very nice too, as even though it is grilled BBQ the seating is spacious, there are dividers strategically giving you privacy from other diners, ventilation quite good and wait staff attentive and informative.
Menu is very easy to understand, informative (they tell you exactly which meat come from which parts of the cow, and where do their cows come from), and impressive too.
A place which I would highly recommend, and a place I am glad to have spent my 34th birthday night dining in.
Pricing: 7/10 – A bit on the premium side, we are talking about wagyu beef after all. But for such great quality, the high price is worth it.
Quality: 9/10 – Really good stuff. Wagyu literally melts in your mouth.
Environment: 8/10 – Cosy, quiet and great place for dinner.
Service: 8/10 – Good and attentive.
Location: 7/10 – In the heart of Desa Sri Hartamas though parking may be scarce during peak hours.
Comeback Factor: Definitely, if I am ever craving great wagyu barbequed or sashimi beef
